People gather at concerts to see their favourite artists live, have a fun night out, or to momentarily forget everything they have going on in their lives. But, on a deeper level, also to let go or reconnect with themselves and the people around them. Likewise, performances are the place where as an artist, you can make the most direct connection with your audience. A magical energy can arise when a group of people in the same place focus on the same experience.
And yet that special energy isn’t always there. When for example the connection between artist and audience is weak, the audience doesn’t feel safe enough, or the elements of the experience don’t form a coherent whole, a concert can fall flat. We believe that every artist, regardless of the resources at their disposal, can create a live experience for their audience.
During a live experience there’s a strong connection between the artist and their audience, as well as amongst the audience itself. During a live experience the worlds of the artist and the audience come together and the audience gets to enter and experience the world of the artist. To help artists create this magical energy and utilize their full potential, they founded The Live Coaches.

With their podcast, The Live Coaches bring their listeners along as they investigate how artists can translate their unique story to the stage and create their ultimate live experience.
The podcast was started after noticing the lack of publicly available information and resources regarding the creation of live experiences by music artists. Most interviews, articles and panel discussions were almost exclusively about the writing and recording process of the music, not about the creation of live music experiences. The Live Coaches realised the knowledge and experience were there, but fragmented and mostly only available to artists with industry support and the budget for a creative team. This was the motivation for starting The Live Coaches podcast: to assemble that knowledge and experience on the topic in one place and make it available for everyone.
So far, The Live Coaches have made three seasons and received over 45 guests, ranging from renowned A-list artists and the visionary directors, technicians, choreographers and designers that make their shows with them, to music journalists, researchers and dramaturgs who analyze experiences from an outsider perspective. The Live Coaches podcast is unique in the world, there is no other podcast that discusses and focuses on the conceptual creation of live experiences by music artists in the same way.

How We Work
Depending on what you want to work on, where you are in your process and what your goals are, various forms of cooperation are possible. Below you find a summary of the most common forms we work in. Of course variations on these forms are possible.
#1 One-time (online) coaching session
This is a brainstorm session of ±1,5 hours in which we discuss your struggles and ideas around your live experience. In advance we send you preparatory questions and we check everything you send us (earlier work, inspirations, lyrics, copy, videos, music, everything that in your view shapes the best context for our session). In the session we can be very specific, or touch on many things on a more superficial level. We can also zoom out and discuss a broad vision, concept or idea. At the end of our session you will have a clear idea of what to work on and how to move forward.
#2 Feedback on a (registration) of your show
We watch your show and note down feedback, after which we do a coaching session to discuss our thoughts. Just as with a one-time coaching session, we send you preparatory questions and check everything you send us (earlier work, inspirations, lyrics, copy, videos, music, everything that in your view shapes the best context for us to experience your show in). Afterwards we have an online coaching session of about 1,5 hours in which we discuss our observations (based on your priorities and questions going into the cooperation) and look at how you could make your live experience more impactful.
*A video recording from FOH (Front Of House / Sound Desk) with a good phone is a good enough recording for us to feedback on
**You can also invite us to attend your show in person. Get in touch through
info@thelivecoaches.nl
for more information and the options.
#3 Rehearsal Visit
If you are already rehearsing for your show, but find yourself in need of a fresh perspective or specific performance coaching, we offer rehearsal visits. This is one of the more practical forms in which we work. We still ask you to send us materials ahead of time that give us an idea of who you are and what impact you want to make with your show, but instead of working on your vision, in this form we’ll work on translating it to the stage.
How does your performance come across? And (how) could it be stronger? We watch, listen and feel along with you. On the basis of your stated intention and our observations, we offer feedback, tips, and exercises that you can apply during and after your rehearsal to bring your live experience to the next level.
#4 Live-coaching track
Are you in need of more guidance and input while translating your unique story to a live experience on stage? During a live-coaching track we make a personal plan to work together in creating your ultimate live experience. The track can consist of a combination of coaching sessions, rehearsal visits and feedback sessions, based on your needs and process.
The track is freely adjustable to your own wants and needs. It could be half a year in which we go super deep, but it could also be 4 sessions with clear content and goals that we have in a shorter period. Examples of goals you could have with a coaching track are the making of a club show, preparing a tour, or something like a release show, television appearance or showcase performance. There are lots of possibilities! Contact us to discuss the options in a free online introductory meeting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ‘Live Coaching’ the same as ‘Performance Coaching’?
Live Coaching is not the same as performance coaching, but performance coaching can be a part of live coaching.
In the performing arts the term ‘performance coaching’ refers to working on the performance, movement and facial mimicry of the artists on stage. Or in other words: your stage presence. This can be assessed against an intention: the intended appearance. This process of practical and physical coaching is part of what we do, but only as a part of a larger process.
We start at vision forming; ‘Live Coaching’. A clear vision of what you want your audience to experience is a prerequisite to creating an impactful live experience. Only once your intention is clear, can you work on translating your vision to the stage. At that point performance coaching becomes part of what we do.
What are your prices?
We always look at what you as an artist need. On the basis of your specific development-question we develop a plan. That’s why prices for each session, workshop or coaching track can vary. You can always contact us for an indication.
My budget is limited, can I work with you?
Yes! We like to think in possibilities and will happily think with you to find the best way we can work together within your budget.
Where are you based?
Melanie Esther is based in Amsterdam (NL), Vincent is based in Rotterdam (NL). However, The Live Coaches work throughout The Netherlands and depending on budget and circumstances, it is possible for us to come to you in Belgium or Germany.
*A lot of our work forms are online, so it is possible to work with us independent of where you are based. Also see: ‘Working With The Live Coaches’
Where can I best follow you?
The best place to follow us is on Instagram. That’s where we most regularly keep you posted on the latest news. Would you like to be the first to know about new podcast episodes and specials? Then follow us on Spotify or in your favourite podcast player. You can also subscribe to our newsletter by sending us a DM on Instagram or e-mailing us at info@thelivecoaches.nl, for more in depth updates and news on special events and exclusive masterclasses.
When could it be relevant for me to work together with The Live Coaches?
Examples of good opportunities to work with us are during the preparation of an important show or tour. Think of a release show where you really want to create the world of your single, EP or album, an important support show/tour, an industry showcase or an important festival appearance.
If you’re thinking of working with us, we always recommend to involve us as early as possible in the process. Our method works best if we are involved from the beginning. However, it is of course possible to approach us at any moment.
For schools and organizations:
Workshop / Masterclass (1,5 - 3 uur)
In our interactive workshops and masterclasses we work with artists on their vision on live experiences. The central question: how do you translate your unique story as an artist to a live experience? We break this down into two parts. In the first, we refine what you want your audience to feel and take away from your show. In the second, we look at ways to bring that experience to life on stage. Through our unique methodology, we share insights, analyze inspiring examples, and engage in dialogue. The workshop’s focus can be tailored based on its context and participants' needs. Participants leave the workshop inspired and with many new insights and concrete tools on how they could bring their world to life on stage.
We also offer (guest)lectures, or you can ask us to appear in panel-discussions or as judges in different relevant contexts. For more information e-mail us at
